  1. Shannen and the Dream for a School made me realize the unfairness in the lives of aboriginal people across Canada. This book convinced me to think more about racial discrimination in Canada, a developed country where everyone should be treated equally, and all have the same rights. The portables which Shannen and her friends went to school in was very well-described, making me think about how lucky the McMurrich community is, we have never known anything but a warm, accessible school with new technology to enhance our learning, resources, and amazing, supportive teachers, all under the same roof. At the same time, I realize that there are still many First Nations children who do not have schools that are clean, and support their learning. In my opinion, much like the author of this book's we shouldn't take attention away from giving a hand up to developing countries, but Canada should focus more on the problems happening in our country. Although I really enjoyed this book, I would have liked to hear more about Shannen's reaction to Brendon's death, because it would have been interesting to know how she reacted to a death in her tightly-knit, small community, also that of a former classmate. I also would have liked to see pictures from inside the portables, because I can only IMAGINE what they were like, it would have been easier to visualize if there had been pictures to back up my ideas of what it would have been like. Lastly, the pictures in the book were really bad quality, all fuzzy and pixelated, so that didn't support the text.

NOTE: I forgot to mention this, but I really liked the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, they were very meaningful.

  2. I thought that Shannen and the Dream For A School was motivational and inspiring because of the long, hard journey that Shannen was forced to take to be able to get a school in Attawapiskat. It really shows what people, and that doesn't just include adults, go through. It inspired me to think about what the world is going through and how I can help. The quotes above each chapter were really powerful and helpful to the reader.
